A New Chapter ...

Hopefully by now you’ve had a chance to see our new website for the Cure 4 The Kids Foundation. It's where you'll find information about the Hemophilia Treatment Center of Nevada and the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada.  (If not,  please check it out at www.cure4thekids.org.)
Here's a quick update on many of the changes and happenings:

Reno

Hemophilia Treatment Center

We are now operating in Reno as well as Las Vegas. It made sense on several fronts for us to expand our services into Northern Nevada and to comply with the mission of the Cure 4 The Kids Foundation which is to provide access to medical treatment for devastating childhood diseases, regardless of family income or presence of health insurance. That it not to say, we haven't been a presence in Northern Nevada.

For years medical staff from the Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) have gone around the state to hold clinics in outlying areas and provide medical treatment. The medical team will see folks with inherited bleeding disorders in places like Ely, Elko, Winnemucca and the Owyhee Indian community.  These are places without medical experts in inherited bleeding disorders.  If any of these folks have a desire or need to be seen more regularly, there is now a permanent place in Reno for them to go.  So you know, we’re at 540 W Plumb Lane, Suite 200, Reno, NV 89509.  You can find everything from phone, fax and map info at www.cure4thekids.org --click on the Reno/location tab.
For now, the HTC is open on Friday to see patients.  That will be expanding as needed in the future.

Children’s Specialty Center

About the time we decided we needed a permanent facility in Reno, an opportunity literally fell into our lap!  Pediatric Hematology Oncology, a practice which includes the outstanding providers Dr. Caroline Hastings, Dr. Joe Torkildson, and Dr. Robert Raphael, was also looking to expand.  After a few conversations, and a few short weeks, it was decided the three doctors would partner with Cure 4 The Kids Foundation.
(Dr. Jonathan Bernstein, Dr. Caroline Hastings, Dr. Joe Torkildson during the Reno HTC Open House)

All three providers are based at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland and provide service in Reno on specific days.  Dr Hastings has been traveling to Reno for 21 years to treat patients with Hematology and Oncology needs.  Now with all three doctors on board, the Reno facility will be seeing patients on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. This is a great partnership that provides Northern Nevada families with access to Board Certified Pediatric Hematology/Oncology providers.  Pair that with the Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s mission to provide medical treatment for devastating childhood diseases regardless of ability to pay, and no child in Northern Nevada will ever have to go without medical treatment.

Las Vegas

Hemophilia Treatment Center

If you haven’t been to the HTC in Las Vegas in a while, we’re now on the second floor-Suite 206! We expanded the number of exam rooms and we have more space to operate!  In case you missed the opening in December 2011, we put a little more information here: http://bit.ly/HXYFhw.

Be sure to check out the Renee Paper Library as well.  This is a great resource for anyone with inherited bleeding disorders and those who know someone with a bleeding disorder. It’s filled with books, research materials, pamphlets and other educational items.  The library was dedicated during the opening of the new HTC location in December of 2011. Renee, who had Von Willebrand disease, literally started the Hemophilia Foundation of Nevada, (the headquarters were in a bedroom of her home) after she moved to our state and noticed a lack of resources. She passed away in 2007.

Children’s Specialty Center

Lately, it’s not a big surprise to see a photographer in the clinic photographing providers, nurses, medical staff and patients.  We’re putting a new emphasis on promoting the good things we do for the kids of Nevada--and you need pictures to do that! You’ll be seeing and hearing more about that in the future.

We’re still thrilled with the turnout at our first Kops 4 The Kids event!  Yes, it’s true!  We had horses from Metro’s Mounted Patrol in the parking lot! We had members of the Crime Scene investigation unit on hand showing kids how to see their own fingerprints, the way investigators would see fingerprints at a crime scene. Clark County Firefighters,   US Forest Service, Metro’s K-9, Bomb Squad, and many more attended. Check out the video: http://youtu.be/0daAGyMJj2s  We also had excellent coverage of the event from Channel 8, Channel 13, Channel 5-- did you see Breezy on TV?  See more photos on our Flickr site.
